A no butter single-serve chocolate chip recipe is a fast, simple way to satisfy chocolate cravings without heating your entire kitchen. This single-serve mug cake uses oil instead of butter to create a moist, tender crumb loaded with melting chocolate chips in just five minutes.

  • Total Time: 6 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons room temperature water
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Scoop 1/4 cup all-purpose flour into a microwave-safe mug.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder directly to the flour.
  3. Stir in 3 tablespoons granulated sugar until the mixture becomes uniform in color.
  4. Add 1/4 teaspoon baking powder and a tiny pinch of salt.
  5. Whisk all dry ingredients together thoroughly using a small fork or spoon.
  6. Measure 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 3 tablespoons room temperature water, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract into a small bowl or cup.
  7. Stir the wet ingredients vigorously until completely combined.
  8. Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the mug containing the dry ingredients.
  9. Stir everything together until you reach a smooth batter consistency.
  10. Fold in 1/4 cup chocolate chips gently using a spoon.
  11. Place the mug in the microwave with at least 2 inches of clearance above the batter.
  12. Microwave on high power for 2 to 3 minutes, checking at the 2-minute mark.
  13. Stop microwaving when the cake pulls away from the mug sides but the center still jiggles slightly.
  14. Remove the mug using an oven mitt because it will be very hot.
  15. Let the cake cool for 1 to 2 minutes before eating directly from the mug.
  16. Top with whipped cream, ice cream, or powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Use room temperature water for smoother mixing and fill the mug only halfway to prevent overflow. Start checking at 2 minutes because microwave power varies. Eat warm for the best tender texture and melted chocolate chips.
